\u201cMai\u201d Chaiyaporn completed Non-Formal Education to the Grade 12 level. He worked as a CCTV Installation Technician to support himself and his family before he was imprisoned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mai had just completed Grade 12 and was planning to enter vocational school to become an electrician when he was accused in this case. During the two-year period of the trial, he did not dare to apply to study because he was afraid that if he was imprisoned and his study interrupted, the money he spent on tuition and other school fees would be wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020, the political situation in Thailand was heating up and many citizens were dissatisfied with the ruling to dissolve the Future Forward Party. A strong wave of protest ensued which wave spread throughout the country and remains an inspiration today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The turning point for Mai from following the political situation on social media to joining protests occurred after the dispersal of the demonstration by the Khana Ratsadon 2563 at Pathumwan Intersection on 16 October 2020. That day, the police used a high-pressure water cannon to spray chemical-laced water and tear gas on protestors for the first time. This caused Mai to decide to join with his friends to help protestors as a guard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mai joined with friends in the Vocational Students to Protect Democracy group and worked as a guard to look after the demonstrations. His primary responsibility was to track the broad picture and not allow any third-hands or ill-intentioned people to create problems. He later joined Gear of Democracy: Vocational Students Protect Democracy of Thailand. But in the end, he decided to leave the group and protest independently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the August-October 2021 period, the independent group \u201cThalugaz\u201d held many demonstrations. The police set up a large number of security checkpoints. On 29 August 2021, Mai Chaiyaporn and Tee Thiranai were arrested at a police security checkpoint after they were found to have ping pong bombs hidden under their vehicle. After being indicted on 30 August 2021, the Court granted them with the condition of wearing an electronic monitoring (EM) ankle bracelet. There was a trial in the case, but they chose to confess at the last minute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 15 February 2023, the Court of First Instance judged that they were guilty of \u201cillegal possession of bombs without permission\u201d in regards to the 10 ping pong bombs that were found during the search. The prosecution argued that they were Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that could be used as bombs that could cause grievous bodily injury and material damage up to 2 meters away. They were each sentenced to 6 years in prison; but the punishment was halved to 3 years as they confessed. Neither was granted bail while the case is appealed.<\/span><\/p>\n
