“Bright” Shinawat Chankrajang, a vendor and political activist, is the father of 2 children. He began political activism as part of the Nonthaburi New Generation Network as he lived in Nonthaburi. He then joined the Muang Non Ratsadon Mob. Bright often made political speeches during demonstrations and also from protest vehicles during 2020-2023. Bright is being prosecuted on a total of 54 cases related to political demonstrations, including 8 Article 112 cases.
Bright was imprisoned for the first time in 2022. He was arrested by the police on 28 July 2022 in front of the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court on an Article 112 case while speaking at a protest calling for the right to bail for Bung and Bai Por, two activists with Thaluwang, who had been on hunger strike for nearly two months. He was taken to the Drug Crime Suppression Division inside the Police Club and held there until he was taken to the Court for remand on 1 August 2022. He received bail after being detained for 26 days.
Bright was imprisoned for the second time on 13 December 2023. The Criminal Court sentenced Bright to 6 years imprisonment and a fine of 22,000 baht for violation of Article 112 and Article 116 of the Criminal Code. Bright confessed and so his sentence was reduced to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of 11,100 baht, with no suspension of punishment. This case arose from his speeches during a demonstration at Lad Phrao Intersection on 2 December 2020. He was detained for 2 days before being granted bail on 14 December 2023.
Bright was imprisoned for the third time on 29 February 2024. The Criminal Court sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment and a 12,200 baht fine for a speech he gave in front of the Siam Commercial Bank headquarters on 25 November 2020. Bright confessed and so his sentence was reduced to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of 6,100 baht, with no suspension of punishment. He entered prison after his request for bail was denied by the Appeal Court.
