“Khru Yai” Attapon Baupat was prosecuted by the public prosecutor for violation of Articles 112 and 116 of the Criminal Code, the Emergency Decree, and for using a loudspeaker without permission. The charges stemmed from a speech about reforming the monarchy at a rally in front of Phu Khiew School and the Phu Khiew Police Station on 1 February 2021. The rally was organized to demand an apology from the Phu Khiew police for harassing students at their homes.
The trial for this case took place from mid-April to early May 2024, and the Court of First Instance issued its verdict on 13 September 2024.
The court ruled that both defendants – “Khru Yai” Attapon Buapat and Pai Jatupat Boonpattararaksa -- were guilty under Article 112 and sentenced each to three years in prison, with an additional one and a half years for Jatupat as he reoffended within 3 years after serving a previous sentence. This led to a total sentence of four years and six months for Jatupat. Due to Jatupat’s useful testimony, his sentence was reduced by one-third, to 2 years and 12 months. As for “Khru Yai”, he was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment. The court dismissed the charges under Article 116, the Emergency Decree, and for using a loudspeaker without permission.
