“Phoom,” an activist and rescue volunteer, wase interested in politics and was involved with political activism since he was 17. In 2020, he participated in various public assemblies, including when activists and members of the public went to Khlong Luang Police Station to demand the release of “New” Sirichai Nathuang on 14 January 2021. The activities and speeches made that night caused him to become a suspect in an Article 112 case and later indicted in the Central Juvenile and Family Court.
Phoom’s actions that caused him to be charged with lèse majesté charges included throwing dog food pellets at a portrait of His Majesty the King installed above the sign of the Khlong Luang Police Station.
Prior to the first day of witness examination on 18 October 2023, Phoom recanted his previous statements and pled guilty to the charges. The Juvenile Court, pursuant to a special measure in lieu of sentencing the defendant, invoked Article 132, paragraph two, of the Juvenile and Family Court and Juvenile and Family Case Procedure Act and sent him to custody at the Juvenile Observation and Probation Center for one year while requiring that he attend at least two vocational courses.
By imposing the special measure in lieu of sentencing, the Court denied him the chance to post bail. His legal counsel could only appeal the decision and ask the Court to revise the order. After several appeals, the Court doubled down on the original sentence; Phoom has been incarcerated in the Juvenile Observation and Probation Center until now.
Being incarcerated in the Juvenile Observation and Probation Center, Phoom can only have visitation from his relatives and legal counsel. For several months, Phoom was suffering from health problems concerning his shoulder as he had an accident in custody in February 2024 that left him with a dislocated shoulder. He urgently needs an operation of his shoulder, but being incarcerated, Phoom’s access to the treatment has been delayed. The physical injury has taken a significant h toll on Phoom’s mental condition.
Poom was released on 15 October 2025 after being imprisoned for 364 days.
