“Bas” Prawit , was convicted by the Criminal Court of violation of the Emergency Decree and setting fire to buildings and was sentenced to a total of six years and four months without suspension on 11 July 2023. He was accused of being complicit in setting fire to traffic booths under the Din Daeng Expressway after the cessation of the #Mob10August demonstration in 2021.

“Bas,” who has two children, ages 4 and 1.6, respectively, was arrested on 20 August 2021. Then, he was allowed to post bail with the condition of having to wear an EM anklet. The EM anklet made it difficult for him to find work.

Bas reported himself to the Court at regular intervals and then attended witness hearings on 19-20 January 2023. Nonetheless, on the last day of witness hearings, he decided to recant his previous statements and plead guilty to the charges. The Court scheduled the verdict for 11 July 2023.

On 11 July 2023, the Criminal Court convicted Bas for being complicit in setting fire to public buildings and sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment. He was sentenced to eight months in jail for violation of the Emergency Decree. Given that he was only 19 years old when the offence was committed, the penalty was reduced by one third according to Article 76 of the Criminal Code.

Given his guilty plea, the punishment was reduced by half on each count. For the violation of the Emergency Decree, the sentence was reduced to four months, and for arson, it was reduced to six years. Altogether, he was sentenced to six years and four months without suspension.

Bas was also ordered to pay damages worth 428,600 baht plus 5% interest rate per annum of the principle, counting from when the offence was committed on 10 August 2021 until the indictment. Altogether, the interest comes to 5,460.25 baht and so the total damages amount to 434,060.25 baht.
